princess post: cinderella
Today's post is about Cinderella. Fun fact about Cinderella: I used to watch the movie constantly when I was a littlelittle girl.
Cinderella is the favorite princess of my dear friend Becky. Becky wrote a great manifesto for why you too should love Cinderella! Becky writes, "I love Cinderella because she's able to wake up in a tiny, dusty, poorly furnished room as a servant to her stepmother and sisters and not complain. The first thing she does when she wakes up is sing (which is truly the best way to start your morning), and not a depressing song or anything like that. No. Her song is optimistic. It talks about her dreams coming true. She dances around singing jovially before making breakfast for everyone but herself and carrying everyone's laundry around on her head.

The scene in the movie that really seals the deal for me is when Cinderella first arrives at the ball. She's in the most beautiful dress to ever grace the eyes of mankind and she's just exploring the castle, walking around curiously when the Prince walks up behind her and takes her hand. That moment makes my heart sing. If that's not one of the most romantic scenes in any movie, I don't know what is.
I think my love for Cinderella can basically be summed up in one quote: "And yet, through it all, Cinderella remained ever gentle and kind, for with each dawn she found new hope that someday her dreams of happiness would come true."
Becky also made a Polyvore for what she thinks Cinderella would wear today.

princess post: aurora
This is a new post I'll be doing here on my blog for the next week or so. I'll be focusing on Disney princesses and the people who love them. Today's princess is...
My good friend Rachel's favorite princess is Aurora from Sleeping Beauty. She writes, "Aurora's my favorite Disney Princess because she's a nature-loving dreamer who gets to walk around barefoot throughout most of the film. She's friends with all the forest animals, sings, and loves strongly. The animation Sleeping Beauty is just one of my favorites... Not to mention, being awakened by a magical kiss doesn't sound too bad."
Rachel thinks that Aurora would wear this if she was alive today:
and she says, "Aurora's look today would be simple and sweet. She needs sunglasses to protect her eyes from the sun and rainboots for tromping around in the dirt all day. Add a nature-friendly tote bag, and an owl necklace with a flower hair barrette in honor of her forest friends and she's good to go for her daily adventures! ...Don't forget the pink and blue dress to not show favoritism from her fairy guardians!"
My own take on Aurora is slightly different:
Here are two outfits I could see Aurora wearing- one to dance with her prince, and one to take a walk through the forest- perhaps late at night, due to the insomnia she'd suffer from after such a long sleep.

I'm interested in doing a little series on the Disney princesses. I'm getting my friends to pick a princess, make a Polyvore featuring an outfit they think the princess would wear today, as well as a paragraph or so on why this princess is their favorite.
I think I will allow doubles for this, but if you want to be ~unique and do one no one else has done, I already have young ladies working on Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Jasmine, and Snow White.
If you're interested, let me know! I'll link to your livejournal/tumblr/blog, whatever you'd like when it's posted.
(I also count Mulan, Pocahantas, and even Nala as Disney princesses. Don't be afraid if your favorite isn't a traditional girl!)

magic monday
So, on this Magic Monday, I'd like to talk about some of my favorite literary heroines. These aren't nearly all of them, but some that I thought of while making this post. Most of my favorite female book characters are children at the beginning, and I wondered what they would be doing, wearing, and thinking at 22, my age.
Wendy Darling, Peter Pan.
girlchild who went with her younger brothers to neverland, where they had adventures and she took care of them.
Wendy would be a pretty young governess with her hands filled with rowdy boys who thought she was their mother. She would wear white and blue and her shoes would always be spotless. She wouldn't go on adventures anymore, because adventures were for little boys who were allowed to get their shoes dirty. She wouldn't mind translating Latin, but sometimes at night she would stand on the edge of the windowsill and pray. She'd pray to Peter, please please please. Come back.
Dorothy Gale, Wizard of Oz
girlchild who went to oz, where she had adventures and saved a whole world
Dorothy would be so over Kansas. She'd get the hell out of Dodge and become a pin up classic. She'd like the sailor look- blue dress like she used to wear, red heels for irony, and red lips for smiling. She'd pose and laugh and never look back. The yellow brick road followed her this time.
Alice, Alice in Wonderland
girlchild who went to wonderland, where everyone was mad and even the flowers had faces
Alice would never grow up like Wendy and Dorothy. She'd spend her days wandering the gardens and being dreamy. She'd look for men who wore top hats and spoke in riddles. She'd smile when she found one but she'd never be satisfied. She wanted to keep looking, because searching was the fun part. She liked the rabbit hole. She liked Wonderland. She liked childish things and would never put them away.

Merricat would still be a little bit mad. She'd never grow out of that, that was what being insane meant. She'd wear only dark clothes, and lost necklaces she found in other people's lawns. She hated shoes and never wore them. She didn't like the way her toes pinched and twisted, forced into a little dark spot where they could never wiggle.

movies that make you cry
Today I saw the beautiful Up in the Air. It was a great movie- really funny and heartfelt and smart. And it had Jason Bateman in it, so it fit all of my movie requirements. However, at the end of the movie, I found myself crying in the theater. I can't remember the last time that happened.
So, what movies make you cry? For me it's a range of movies. The one that immediately comes to mind is Alfonso Cuaron's A Little Princess. This movie is incredibly beautiful, and one of my favorites. I was a fan of this movie as a kid, and now I'm a huge fan of Cuaron. I used to read the book all the time, but the book ending and the movie are very different. Although the book's ending is sadder in a way, this movie makes me cry.
Capt. Crewe: What are you doing? Memorizing me by heart?
Sara Crewe: No... I already know you by heart.
One of the last scenes in the movie never fails to make me tear up... Warning, HUGE SPOILER ALERT in this clip of the scene below.
I teared up watching it again for this post! Again, huge spoiler warning.
Another is Bridge to Terabithia
I loved the book as a kid, and I saw this when I was much, much older. To my immense surprise, I sobbed through most of the movie. Here is just the trailer.
Don't be fooled by the action/adventure style of the trailer. This movie is sad.
The only happy moment on this list to make me cry happy tears belongs to When Harry Met Sally. Another HUGE SPOILER ALERT BELOW.
AND OF COURSE... It's a Wonderful Life! NEVER fails to make me tear up! Jimmy Stewart does amazing things to me.
